Big Band classics set to resonate in Swansea

PRLog (Press Release) – Jul 29, 2011 – Swansea will come alive with the sounds of a by-gone era next week when world renowned trombonist Phil Dando rolls into town along with his fourteen piece swing band.

Miller by Moonlight takes place at Oystermouth Castle, Mumbles, on Friday 5 August and will see Phil Dando Big Band captivate their audience with a whole host of classics in what promises to be an outdoor musical extravaganza.

Consisting of five saxophones, four trumpets, piano, bass and drums along with vocalist Heather Castle and Phil himself on trombone, Phil Dando Big Band will recreate the music of the Big Band Era featuring favourites from Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey and Duke Ellington and such classics as Moonlight Serenade, Tuxedo Junction, Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree, Perfidia and Pennsylvania 65000.

Phil Dando, said, “Our original Big Band library has been created by trumpeter and arranger Mike Blake and encompasses a wide range of music from the Big Band Swing Era.”

“The band, along with our fabulous vocalist, produces a wonderfully rich sound and will bring all the classic tunes back to life, for your enjoyment. Whether you sit and listen or dance in the park, this is an evening's entertainment not to be missed.”

Gates open 6.30pm with the show starting at 7.30pm.  Tickets are £8.50 in advance (£7.50 concessions) and £10 on the day (£9 concessions) and can be purchased from both Swansea and Mumbles Tourist Information Centres, online at http://www.swanseabayfestival.com or by calling 01792 637300.

Frances Jenkins, Strategic Manager for Tourism, Marketing and Events said,
“Oystermouth Castle offers a spectacular setting and has always been very popular for a range of different events over the years.”

“It is great to add Miller by Moonlight to this year’s Oystermouth Castle events schedule and we hope that music fans will enjoy the classics of yesteryear.”

“We would encourage the audience to bring chairs and a picnic to make the most of their evening.  If the weather should take a turn for the worse, the show will still go on as we have an inclement weather venue available.”

Miller by Moonlight is organised by the City and County of Swansea as part of the Swansea Bay Summer Festival and is kindly supported by The Wave and Swansea Sound and Sinclair Mercedes.
