It's nae Rio - Scotland's biggest Brazilian carnival promises explosion of colour and sound

PRLog (Press Release) - Aug 11, 2011 - The second annual Brazilian Carnival Week-end in the grounds of Kelburn Castle, in Fairlie, will be an extravaganza of bright costumes, pounding rhythms and exotic food and drink, evoking the infectious spirit of the South American country, say those behind the two day event on the 13th and 14th of August.

Topping the bill during the day is the renowned Ritmo Brazilian Dance Company, a troupe of professional dancers and choreographers formed in London in 2009 to promote Brazilian culture in Europe.

Also appearing will be Glasgow's own Samba Ya Bamba, a band that fuses traditional Samba with more contemporary styles such as Drum & Bass and Bhangra and the Fontanas, a Brazilian funk band.

There will also be evening and late night sessions featuring live music and DJs delivering performances inspired by the music and culture of Brazil, Africa and the Carribean.

Throughout the two days of entertainment, there will also be Brazilian-themed sideshows and exhibitions, stalls selling Brazilian arts and crafts and a variety of food and drink areas.

The festival, now in its second year, was inspired by a Brazilian graffiti project painted on the turret of the 13th Century castle in May 2007. The work, commissioned by the Earl’s daughter Alice, was completed by Brazilian graffiti artists Nunca, Octavio and Gustavo Pandolfo.

Kelburn, one of Scotland most popular tourist attractions, offers a range of facilities including its renowned Secret Forest, an adventure course, a falconry centre, an animal park, miles of woodland walks and one of Scotland’s biggest stables.

The castle has been home to the Boyle family since the 13th Century and the Earls of Glasgow since the 18th Century.

“This festival, which celebrates the best of Brazilian culture, is fast becoming a staple of Scotland’s events calendar,” said Lord Glasgow, a Liberal Democrat peer.

“Our links with the South American country began through friends of my son who painted the striking mural on the turret walls and they have grown from there.

“Anyone who loves this incredibly vibrant country with its incredible people, music and culture has been welcomed in the past couple of years and thousands have joined us for a day of celebration.

“While the Firth of Clyde might not seem the most likely place to witness a samba in full swing, it creates a wonderfully colourful spectacle that brings the place alive.”

The Earl added: “We fully expect that this year’s festival will be the best yet with a spectacular line up of musical and dance talent.”

Normal entry rates to the estate have been amended to reflect the added attractions. Adult rates for a daily pass will be £10 (£7 for under 17s) and £30 for a family ticket. A daily pass entitles entry between 10am and 6pm.  For more details go to www.kelburnestate.com

Adult week-end passes, which permit access to evening and late night performances, are available for £32 and can be booked online at www.kelburngardenparty.com

Kelburn Castle and Country Centre is one of Scotland’s most successful tourist venues, attracting more than 60,000 visitors-a-year. Its attractions include a secret forest, an adventure course, a falconry centre, an animal park and one of Scotland’s biggest stables.

The castle, home to the Earls of Glasgow since the 13th Century, features a world famous Brazilian graffiti project.

During school holidays it runs daily family fun events with seasonal themes and there are ranger guided walks and environmental themed events, provided with funding from Scottish Natural Heritage.

It operates educational services, hosting trips from parties of pupils from primary, secondary and special schools. There are plans to host corporate events, private dinners and weddings at the 13th Century castle, occupied by the earl’s family, and to market the estate as a film location. A pavilion, currently being renovated, will also provide a venue for private functions
