In ancient China, the most honored men and women were said to have possessed the greatest virtue and honor, and it was believed that doing good deeds would bring good fortune. Unfortunately, due to sociopolitical changes in the 20th century, China has seen a loss of many cultural traditions—a tragedy that Shen Yun Performing Arts (www.ShenYunPerformingArts.org) now strives to remedy.

Based in New York, Shen Yun Performing Arts was established in 2006 to revive the glory of traditional Chinese culture. Every year, a completely new production is brought to life with beautifully expressive classical Chinese dancers, exquisite handmade costumes, a live orchestra featuring a blend of Western and Eastern instruments, animated state-of-the-art, three-dimensional backdrops and performances by decorated vocal and instrumental soloists. Shen Yun Performing Arts has performed on some of the world’s most renowned stages, including London’s Royal Festival Hall, Washington D.C.’s John F. Kennedy Center, New York City’s Lincoln Center and Radio City Music Hall, Paris’ Le Palais de Congrès, and many, many more.

Since its beginning 5,000 years ago, Chinese culture has found its way into every corner of the globe in the form of martial arts, Feng Shui, Tai Chi, herbal medicine, acupuncture, and more. The origin of these ancient practices is amazingly spiritual and mystical. Indeed, China was once known as “Shen Zhou,” or “Land of the Divine,” due to the belief of the Ancient Chinese that its culture was inherited from the heavens. Unfortunately, due to sociopolitical revolutions in the 20th century, much of China’s rich cultural traditions have been lost.

The essence of traditional Chinese culture is based on inner cultivation of one’s moral character and adherence to Confucian ethics. As Li Weihao, Triple Crown Winner of the Taiwan National Dance Competition puts it, “From the dances to the body movements, I enjoyed all of them, and I just don’t know how to describe it—a kind of inner beauty.” Weihao speaks a sentiment that all the dancers in Shen Yun Performing Arts believe in: that to create true art, inner beauty must first be born.

At a packed show at New York City’s Lincoln Center earlier this year on June 23rd, fashion designer Donna Karan of DKNY expressed that the shows were “like taking a journey to China, here in New York.” In order to effectively showcase traditional Chinese culture, Shen Yun Performing Arts presents well-known fables and legends that have been passed on from generation to generation, as well as diverse ethnic dance styles using aesthetically stunning costumes characteristic of each dynasty. Shen Yun Performing Arts’ repertoire guides the audience from ancient China into present day Communist China in an educational and spiritually enlightening journey.
