Heidelberg’s history has had an unfortunate association with fire as several times in its past the city has nearly been toppled during wars. The castle was actually blown up by a French General over the course of the 30 Years’ War but the city’s ability to rebuild is widely celebrated during the festivities and the displays are a remembrance of this.
Before the main spectacle, visitors can attend a festive concert taking place on Market Square in the Church of the Holy Spirit which starts at 18:15. The fireworks start from 22:15 and among the best views are from the river by the South bank at Neckarstaden or the North bank at Neuenheimer Landstrasse. Anyone using cheap Heidelberg hotels (http://directrooms.com/germany/hotels/heidelberg-hotels/ ...) on the night can also try to book one of the boats that cruise the river and have optimum positions to catch the entertainment.
Lek Boonlert, marketing head at DirectRooms.com commented: “So many people fill the city that it creates problems with traffic and hotels often don’t have enough rooms for everyone. Booking early is a must for people hoping to attend the event.”
