SBPRA Authors Win Pinnacle Book Achievement Awards

PRLog (Press Release) – Jul 27, 2011 – COTTAGE GROVE, Oregon – Each year, for the past twenty-six years, the North American  Bookdealers Exchange (NABE) honors some of the finest work published by its member. This summer, Strategic Book Publishing and Rights Agency has an impressive fourteen authors and fifteen titles selected as winners. The SBPRA authors are Stuart Bramhall, Sherrill Cannon, Allyson L. Sherrill S. Cannon was a winner in the Children’s Interest category for The Magic Word, the delightful rhyming tale of a little girl who needs to learn some manners. Little Kim, by author Kim Nga Nguyen, won in the Children’s Bilingual category for its inspirational account of a child forced to leave her country in 1975 after losing her father and home during the Vietnam War.

The best books in Juvenile Fiction included Stuart Bramhall’s The Battle for Tomorrow, a fable that speaks cogently to the urgent issues of today, as well as Peggy L. Headlund’s Common Sense: Listening to the Spirit, the fourth book in her acclaimed Lillia Faith Christian series. Headlund was a two-time winner, also selected in the Health category for Sexy at Sixty: Live Well & Happy Men & Women Over Fifty!    

Karen Kearney’s Mystery on Sprite Island won the Young Adult Mystery award for a tale that speaks to the need in all of us to discover who we are and can become with a little help from our friends – on both sides of the grave!  

Karen Macik won Best Novel for her Dear Daddy David, a sweeping saga of love lost and then found while the Adventure-Romance award went to Nannette Holliday for The Sting of Fate, a sweeping love story that spans three continents and changes the lives of two people forever. In the category of Women’s Literature, Alma Hudson’s moving story of domestic violence, The Trouble With Change, was the winner.

The best book award in the New Age category went to Allyson L. Giles’ Believe: A Tale of Faye, a magical story that will make you believe in fairies. Mike Saxton, with his epic and much heralded sci-fi adventure 7 Scorpions: Rebellion, was a winner in the Science Fiction category. And Kate Nevermore nailed the Vampire Science Fiction prize for her Blood for the Living, a dark yet exciting look at a future where sects of vampires rule society.

Ettore Grillo’s Travels of the Mind was chosen in the Non-Fiction category; the author’s self-healing autobiography is about his journey back from paranoid schizophrenia. Medium Raine, who found self-empowerment through spiritual development, was a winner for her autobiography as well; And Rainedrops Fall Down My Cheeks was the best book in the Spiritual category.

The award in the Humor category went to Keith Graham’s A POV’s Guide to Overseas Travel. This tongue-in-cheek memoir will have you laughing out loud as well as gleaning tips on how to travel the world on a budget.

The main event was hosted by Radio Personality Sarah Fraser and VH1 Reality Star Wil “Onix” Lash, with music by DJ Neekola. Attendees included Jaime Foster Brown of Sister-2-Sister Magazine, NFL Players Darnerien McCants (Retired, Washington Redskins, Baltimore Ravens, etc.), Fred Davis (Washington Redskins), Brandon Banks (Washington Redskins), Rocky McIntosh (Washington Redskins), 2011 Draft Pick Keith Payne (Philadelphia Eagles); America’s Next Top Model Bianca Chardei was a featured model. Brooklynite Bess Rogers has created national recognition through her work as lead guitarist and backing vocalist for Ingrid Michaelson, and is quickly becoming a star in her own right.  Her fan-funded album, Out Of The Ocean, will be released on September 20 with the first single, “Anchor,” released to radio and iTunes in August.  Bess has spent this summer as the singing voice of the nationally televised Mott’s For Tots advertising campaign with her song, “We Believe In You,” and has had other compositions featured on television shows such as Switched At Birth, One Tree Hill, and Pretty Little Liars.  In recent months Bess has shared the stage with Ari Hest, Lelia Broussard, Jay Brannan, Rachel Platten, Caleb Hawley and others.

Ian Axel began his career when his typical 20-something job working at a Manhattan Apple Store suddenly became not-so-typical as his bosses caught wind of his musical talents.  They flew him around the country to perform at dozens of stores around the United States, and included his songs on the playlists of hundreds of their stores worldwide.  Ian officially "touched down" in 2011 when he released his debut full-length, This Is the New Year.  The title track received over 1 million YouTube views, he performed on the nationally syndicated Rachael Ray Show and on La Blogothéque's world-renown Take Away Shows, and his songs were featured on TV shows such as "One Tree Hill," and as the theme to the MTV documentary series I Used to Be Fat.

However, it's Ian's live show that shoots him to new frontiers.  He has an energy that recalls the intimacy, energy and excitement of performers like Regina Spektor, Elton John and Randy Newman.  NPR described him as "a voice that possesses the sweetness of youth, the stubbornness of a teenager and the swagger of a rock star."  He is capable of captivating an audience as only the greatest performers do, an appeal that has not gone unnoticed, leading to opening gigs for Ingrid Michaelson, Evan Dando and, most recently, for Glee star Matthew Morrison’s at the 2500-capacity Beacon Theater on August 1st.

Allie Moss hails from New Jersey and, like Bess, also had her start in Ingrid Michaelson's band, handling rhythm guitar & backing vocals. She will be supporting her new LP Late Bloomer on this tour, a 10-song album produced by Sam Kassirer (Josh Ritter, Erin McKeown). The album’s lead track "Corner" was a left-field hit in the UK last year, which racked up over a half-million views on YouTube after being featured on a British Telecom advertisement.  Other songs of hers have been featured on Brothers & Sisters and the CW's Pretty Little Liars. Her new album also features the whimsical, bittersweet single, “Melancholy Astronautic Man” accompanied by a delightful stop-motion video comprised entirely of Legos.

Upcoming rockers JD & The FDCs choose Fret-King guitars

The band's eclectic sound veers from all out rock 'n' roll to indie-rock and hardcore punk, with everything in-between. Singer Jamie Delerict is backed up by the rhythm section Joey Strange (bass) and Danny Gunn (drums), with six-stringer Dazmondo providing off-the-wall lead guitar.

Dazmondo's monster riffs and licks come courtesy of his trusty Fret-King Esprit 5. He says: "My Esprit always seems to get people talking! It looks, plays, sounds and feels so right for me. For a touring workhorse instrument, the only thing I would change is to have another for backup."

The band released their debut record, the FDCCDEP, earlier in the year, and will be making their much-anticipated London debut at Nambucca on Friday July 29th supporting female fronted pop-rockers Shush. "That whole London thing has always been a tough nut to crack," says lead shredder Dazmondo, "but in a way, I'm glad that it's taken so long for us to get our foot in the door as the band is on fire right now!"

The FDCs will then immediately head straight back into the studio for a week to continue working on their debut album, titled Recognise. The album is set to feature cameos from many well-known international names from the world of rock and punk. Dazmondo says: "We've got some big names lined up for the album and I know that my Fret-King Esprit 5 is going to hold its own in the studio alongside the musical heavyweights that JD has on his speed dial!"

The band will continue to play plenty of shows, and will release their second EP, Burn This City Down, on September 1st, a few days before playing their biggest show to date, supporting San Francisco punk legends the Swingin' Utters at the Camden Underworld on September 4th.

Online Magazine Transforms Into Self-Motivating Workshop

The Identity Five are five questions that were created by Susan Vernicek to help women dig deep and self reflect. They are a feature in Identity’s Scratch the Surface videos, where well-known women can be seen answering these questions.  The book tour attendees will be given the chance to answer the Identity Five (participants don’t have to share their answers). It’s a great tool to learn more about you and grow as a person, which is part of Identity’s mission.

Greg Travis Stars As Warren Oates In His New Short Film Nobody Loses All The Time

Susan Compo the Writer of the bio book about Warren Oates "a wild life" is also in the film. She played Katy Haber Sam's Peckinpah's long time assistant. Her book was one of the inspirations for the project.
NLATTart-1PRLog (Press Release) – Jul 27, 2011 – Veteran Character actor Greg Travis ( Watchmen, Halloween 2) has put together a unique short film project which asks the question, What was it like in 1973, when director Sam Peckinpah co-wrote and directed a film starring Warren Oates & Isela Vega entitled “Bring me the Head of Alfredo Garcia”. The film was made in and around Mexico City.  One week into a difficult shoot, the head of United Artist threaten to pull the plug on the entire production.  After a long hot day of shooting, Sam Peckinpah and his producer partners leaped into action in order to save their motion picture.
The film is entitled NOBODY LOSES ALL THE TIME. The title comes from a line in the film by Warren Oates when a man calls him a loser. After having read both the Oates and Peckinpah biographies, Travis wanted to write a play about the making of this unusual cult film “Bring me the head of Alfredo Garcia”. That idea is what brought him to make this short film, which was shot in Beverly Hills over a long weekend in July.  It’s a seventies period piece with authentic costumes and sets. Look alike actors and way cool script. The cast is Rocky Hart as SAM PECKINPAH, Greg Travis as WARREN OATES, Berenice Noriega as ISELA VEGA. The film will be finished by mid-summer and will be entered in various film festivals.

The guitar, which costs £649 (UK RRP), features a solid spruce top, and solid Indonesian rosewood back and sides. The 648mm scale neck is mahogany, with an ebony fingerboard and a Spanish heel. The bridge is rosewood; the nut and saddle bone. The guitar also comes with a luxury fitted case, complete with a Raymond Burley signature plate.

Raymond said: “The guitar is beautifully constructed; the quality of the woods used is superb throughout, so too is the finish. The playability, owing to the beautifully crafted neck shape and action, is excellent, as is the balance between the treble and bass. From new, the guitar had a surprising amount of volume and this will no doubt improve further the more the instrument is played. The SM2000RB represents amazing quality for a very modest price tag, which is even more astonishing when one considers the instrument comes with a plush shaped hard case.”

New market study, "Singapore Tourism Report Q3 2011", has been published

Arrivals to Singapore soared during 2010. Final full-year data from the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) released during Q111 revealed that a total of 11,638,663 tourists visited the Lion state, an increase of 20.2% year on year (y-o-y). There was particularly strong growth in arrivals from the sizeable potential markets of Indonesia (up 32.1% y-o-y), China (up 25%) and Malaysia (up 35.7%). Tourist revenues for the year stood at SGD18.9bn (US$13.9bn), up an incredible 50% y-o-y.

This strong performance reflected improving global economic environment, as well as the positive impact of Singapore's new integrated resorts at Sentosa and Marina Bay Sands. The STB also identified improved tourist sentiment and tactical promotions by airlines and hotels as other key growth drivers over the course of the past 12 months. Further bolstering arrival numbers across 2010 were Singapore's hosting of the first Youth Olympic Games in August and the Singapore Grand Prix, held on the final weekend of September.

Looking forward, we believe that Singapore's tourism success story should continue into 2011, as more people choose to visit the new integrated resorts, particularly from neighbouring Asian countries. Q111 arrival figures were notably robust, up 15.7% y-o-y at 3.12mn visitors. For now, we maintain our target of growth in tourist arrivals in the order of 12% for 2011, which may seem slightly cautious but reflects our view that risks to global economic recovery remain. Austerity measures in Europe and the US may impact on arrivals to Singapore from these two key source tourism markets. Lastly, the devastating Japanese tsunami of March 2011 could well depress growth in this country and reduce outward tourism demand from Japanese citizens. Already, Singapore Airlines (SIA) reduced capacity between Singapore and Tokyo, cutting one of its daily flights between Changi and Haneda airports from the end of March 2011.

The airline has also announced the indefinite postponement of introducing the new Airbus A380 aircraft on the Singapore-Tokyo-Los Angeles route, which was also due to start at the end of March. However, should arrivals data remain robust during the first two quarters of 2011, then we would expect to make some upwards revisions to our current 12% growth in arrivals forecast as the year unfolds.

Singapore Airlines To Launch Budget Offshoot

At the end of May 2011, SIA announced that it has plans to start a low-cost long-haul carrier during 2012. No further details on the airline (such as its name, planned routes and ticket prices) had been released as of late June; however, this development could do much to shake up the low-cost segment of Asian air travel, currently dominated by operators such as Tiger Airways and AirAsia. Although the new low-cost airline will be wholly owned by SIA, it will reportedly have an independent management structure. BMI believes that the new airline should prove a success, leveraging SIA's strong track record in customer care, but at the same time offering competitively priced long-haul flights.

Also in May, SIA announced robust profits for FY10/11 at SGD1,093mn, up by some SGD876mn on the SGD216mn profit reported for FY09/10. Revenues also increased by 14%, to SGD14,525mn. This was a strong performance, especially when set against the many difficulties facing the aviation industry over the past 12 months.

Looking forward, the airline believes that 2011/12 will continue to be challenging for the airline industry, with continued worries over the sustainability of Greece's debt burden, as well as the impact of the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami on travel to and from Japan. Lastly, high oil prices continue to impact on profitability. Integration involves the better cross-promotion of tourism services, with Mr Iswaran giving the example of business travellers meeting at the Suntec centre by day and then visiting the restaurants and other leisure options offered at Resorts World Sentosa by night. The 'See Singapore Attractions Pass', which offers unlimited visits to 20 attractions around the city is another example of innovation cited by the minister. Lastly, Iswaran stated that the country must continue to increase productivity within the hospitality sector, by increasing training and skills within the local workforce.

Recently released market study: Poland Tourism Report 2011

PRLog (Press Release) – Jul 27, 2011 – 2010 A Better Year For Polish Tourism

According to data from the Polish Institute of Tourism (Intur), there were 58.3mn foreign visitor arrivals into Poland during 2010 - of which 12.5mn were tourist arrivals - reflecting increases of 8% and 5% year-on-year (y-o-y) respectively. (Note: 2010 estimates from Intur differ from BMI's estimates this quarter, which are calculated based on data from Glowny Urzad Statystyczny.) Demand returned to the sector following the challenges of 2009, with BMI believing that 2011 can see further growth in tourist numbers as demand increases from neighbouring countries. Beyond this point, 2012 should also prove a boon year for Poland's tourism industry, as the country is co-host of the UEFA 2012 Football Championships with Ukraine.

Also boosting Poland's tourism prospects in the years ahead was its successful partnering of the ITB Tourism fair in March 2011. The fair was an opportunity for Poland to sell its tourism offering to the world just one year ahead of UEFA 2012, with Director of the Polish Tourism office in Germany, Jan Wawrzyniak, stating that 'there is now even greater interest in Poland' as a result.

We are currently targeting an increase in tourist arrivals of 13.4% between 2011 and 2015, indicating that Poland should be welcoming some 14.49mn tourists by 2015 (note: tourism arrivals data differs from Arrivals table on p. 10; see below methodology). Tourist expenditure should increase by a much larger 65.5%, to US$24.88bn. This sharp increase in revenue figures reflects what we expect to be high levels of tourist spend during 2012, as football fans flock to Poland to attend Euro 2012.

Greater Clarity On Inbound And Outbound Tourism Figures

For 2011 BMI has added new information on both inbound and outbound tourism within Poland. Specifically, we discuss inbound and outbound tourism solely for vacation purposes (as opposed to using a holiday as a chance to look for jobs abroad, for example).

Previously, we had tended to look solely at foreign arrivals at border crossings. However, from our research carried out over recent months, we have seen that there were some problems with adopting solely this approach. As an example, although a total of 9.24mn Czech citizens entered Poland during 2010 (second only to Germany in terms of overall numbers of people entering the country) only 175,000 of these people entered as tourists (as defined by Intur). Similarly, a total of 6.01mn Slovak citizens entered Poland during 2010, but only 95,000 of this total were coming to Poland specifically as tourists. Counting 'tourist arrivals' and 'tourist departures' enables us to provide a more accurate analysis of which are the key tourism source and destination markets for Poland.

LOT Still In The Red

Polish national carrier LOT Polish Airways remains in the red, despite an 8% increase in the number of passengers carried over 2010 to 4.5mn. In June 2011 the Warsaw Business Journal reported on comments made by new CEO Martin Pirog that the airline was still loss-making as of April 2011, although its earnings were up by PLN1.25mn y-o-y on the back of a 15% annual increase in passenger numbers. For 2010 the Warsaw Business Journal reported that the airline had announced an operational loss of PLN160mn, although LOT was yet to release its 2010 Annual Report at the time of writing.

The government remains committed to selling LOT at some stage. However, the company's debts will have to be cleaned up before any foreign airline will be interested in buying the carrier. This will necessitate tough cost-cutting measures on the part of the airline, which will have to be agreed with unions. As such, BMI does not believe that any near-term sale of the airline is feasible.
